Some Very Anoying Diseases Appearing at the Old Age
January 15th, 2010Depression is a major issue faced by quantities of care homes novadays. Have you noticed that friends and family members have backed away from spending time with you? Is living from day-to-day becoming more and more of a burden, with no light in sight? Talk therapy helps you to change the way you think, feel and behave to support you in feeling better. Depression is a complex matter. In recent years, with burgeoning research progress, we are finding out that depression is much more common than many of us thought. At least 15% (and likely more) of women take an antidepressant during their lifetime. It is important to understand that depression and sadness are different. The death of a loved one, loss of a relationship, termination of a job, including retirement, will cause us to feel sad. Grief is a normal response to these situations. As reported by care homes in Warwickshire, individuals experiencing challenging times will often remark that he or she feels depressed. However, sadness, grief and depression are not the same. Feelings of sadness and grief will lessen with time while depression can continue for months and years, if untreated.
The fact that depression can be either the cause or the consequence of other illnesses (Parkinson’s Disease, Diabetes, Insomnia, Thyroid, Dementia…) complicates both diagnosis and choice of treatment. For elderly patients with comorbidities, there can be a tendency for doctors to assign the highest priority not to depression but to the ‘other’ disease(s). Another issue that are facing many care homes today is osteoporosis. Anyone can develop osteoporosis, but it is common in older women. As many as half of all women and a quarter of men older than 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. Fractures are responsible for significant morbity- 85% of women cannot walk across a room 6 months after a hip fracture. Research has not yet precisely determined what type or duration of exercise is best for osteoporosis. Nevertheless, most doctors recommend weight-bearing exercise, such as walking, preferably daily.
Because peak bone density is reached at approximately 25 years of age, it is important to build strong bones by that age, so that the bones will remain strong later in life. Adequate calcium intake and exercise are essential for building strong bones. Aggressive prevention and treatment of osteoporosis can involve medications that work by preventing natural breakdown of bone or medications that promote new bone formation. Do the older adults you know seem to be shrinking? Chances are their stature is not what it once was due to bone loss associated with osteoporosis. If you suffer from osteoporosis, a bad fall can do more than ruin your day.
