Resonance with Your Soul’s Song

October 19th, 2009

Yogi Sean is the student of Swami Ramananda and the author of Dancing in the Fire of Transformation, The Everyday Sanyasin, and Experiments in Awareness, a workbook for yogis.

Deep in meditation you can be thinking, “I’m feeling Divine Radiance, and I’m going to connect with my thirty-year-old.” Okay. Maybe I’m breathing, maybe I’m moving my hands around in my aura, I’m trying to feel where my thirty-year-old iswhere I have a sense of my thirty-year-old. At a certain point, I’m going to find him. But it’s going to be hard to connect with him, because he shut down. Remember what I said.

So what I want to do from here, is to really work. If it means, at that point, that I have to start doing the mantra for my Deity Yoga Practice, I do it. If it means singing a songor whatever will amplify my heart resonancethat’s what I will do. Do you know what will happen? That past aspect of you will come to you because he will feel the resonance. All he really wanted was to feel the infinite possibilities of Divine Radiance.

I can even remember that yearning when I was young. You see, my mom would go to shop. She would bring home the next copy of the Golden Book Encyclopedia when I was about seven or eight years old. And I can remember reading about the stars, and reading about Aristotle, Socrates, and other great thinkers, and there would be a little bit of radiance in what they were saying and in what they believed. I yearned to be in that environment. I can still remember that today.

It was resonance with your Soul’s Song. See, you were singing your soul’s song at seven or eight years old. The problem with most of us is that we start to sing our soul’s song, but the culture that we’re inand it’s true of most culturessays “No, don’t sing that song. Sing this other way, instead.” We’ve talked about the school system before, which says, “Sit straight and face the blackboard.” Again, I’ve said that it’s actually easier to talk with the child. I want to just point this out: it’s hard to relate to ourselves as a thirty-year-old, because we know what happened. We know that five years later there was a divorce.

There are things from our mature past that make it hard to connect with those aspects of ourselves. That’s why we want to utilize the Divine Radiance that’s coming through our visualizationthrough the Deity that’s a manifestation of Divine Radianceto begin to approach this aspect of ourselves.

Analysis of Human Analogy Thinking and Artificial Intelligence

May 6th, 2009

One interesting aspect to the human mind is that it thinks in analogies. In other words it relates to one set of events with another set of events which are similar in nature in one or more aspects. This is a fascinating way to use one’s mind in that it allows humans to make decisions in situations that they have never been in before. It allows them to think of what they might do in any given situation based on the outcomes of a different situation. Therefore they can use their experiences and observations and memory to adapt themselves to other situations or events.

When programming artificial intelligence and allowing them to program themselves they too will need this tool. This allows us to take for instance a robotic artificially intelligent android inset them in an environment of which they have never been in before, thus they will size up the situation in use their preprogrammed memory or data and observations from sensors of previous events and outcomes in the deciding what to do. In fact the ability to do this for an artificially intelligent robotic system is paramount.

Indeed, it behooves us to look into the best possible method of ensuring that the who, what, when, where, how and why of each event gets categorized correctly in proper data sets and fields and that’s when such events occurring are similar in nature to those already experienced by this individual robot or down loaded from a collaborative or collective system of experiences is used to better its chances of making the best possible decision in the given event. I feel very strongly about the concept of analogy thinking and programming of artificially intelligent robotic systems, so I wanted to bring this up to you. And I hope you will think of this in 2006.

Anxiety Attacks Treatment - How to Halt Panic and Begin Living

March 13th, 2009

Due to our existence it means that we always have to defeat life’s obstacles. It appears that the more we grow technology and ways to create things more quickly, the more panic anxiety attacks increase. This is an enigma. You could easily guess that worries and workloads would diminish with our continued advancement in technology. Nevertheless, anxiousness and depressive disorder appear worsened now than when compared to the past. It is quite possible that in the past, folk did not talk about such unpleasantries. For sure that is not the same nowadays. Truth is, as a TV watcher, I’m sure you’ve witnessed some sort of ad for a medicinal drug, which provides panic attacks treatment.

You are not alone when dealing with these issues. It does not matter if it is a phobia of massive crowds or a sleep disorder, researchers keep making progress with new solutions. Panic attacks and depressive disorder are for certain at the top of this long list. When I consider depression, I think of an individual who has recently lost a loved one or a person who is afflicted in such a way that prevents them from carrying on normally. In most situations this is not the case. Many individuals are weighed down by the burden of anxiety and depression for other reasons. We usually do not recognize the reasons. Sometimes it could be as simple as the food we eat. For some reason or another, people seem to have problems with remaining content.

A matter that concerns me, is adolescents. Panic attacks and natural depression seems to be striking them more than anyone these days. Acknowledged, being a teenager is awkward in some aspects, and incredibly simple in others. Some teens may claim that it is all negative. We all were teenagers at least once. We certainly know much of what they are going through. Nevertheless, panic attacks were not part of my teen experience. It is challenging to understand the changes of the last ten years. Depression should not be a part of childhood. In fact, anxiety attacks and depressive disorder should be much less prevalent than it is altogether.

Erickson’s Theory of Human Development

February 4th, 2009

I’m sure you’ve heard the term “Identity Crisis” before. It’s thought of as a conflict of self and society and its introduction came from one of the most famous psychoanalyst of the 20th century.

Sigmund Freud is probably the most familiar name that comes to mind when one thinks of famous psychologists. His basic foundation theories of instinct, phallic symbol obsession and oedipal complexes are prevalent in almost every artistic aspect of our culture. However, it was a friend and fellow psychoanalyst of Freud’s, Erik Erickson, who created one of the major theories that open a window to the development of everything that makes us who we are on the inside. It is referred to as Erickson’s Theory of Human Development and it simplifies the complex topic of human personality.

First, let’s talk about the man himself. Erik Homberger was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1902. The conditions under which he began life give a great deal of insight into his obsession with identity. He was challenged with it from the stat. His parents weren’t married and his Danish father left before Erik was born. His Jewish mother married Erik’s pediatrician when he was three. Erik had Nordic features; he was tall, blond and had blue eyes. Neither the Jewish children at temple nor the German children at school accepted him.

As he grew up, psychology and art began to interest Erik and led him to various institutes including one where he was psychoanalyzed by Anna Freud, wife of Sigmund. Both later became close friends to Erickson. When the Nazis came to power, Erik moved to Boston where he studied child psychoanalysis and was influenced by many psychologists and anthropologists Mead, but many famous psychologists and anthropologists.

He is considered a Freudian ego-psychologist, meaning he takes the basic foundation of Freud’s theories, but veers away by focus on social and cultural orientation. Erickson’s theory closely ties personality growth with parental and societal values. His 1950 book, Childhood and Society, is considered a classic in its field.

There are eight stages of human development, each focusing on a different conflict that we need to solve in order to development successfully into the next stage of our lives. The idea is that if we don’t resolve each stage or we choose the wrong of two choices, our ability to deal with the consecutive stages is impaired and the failure will return to us at some point later in life.

Stage One: Oral Sensory

Ages: Birth To 12-18 Months

Conflict: Trust vs Mistrust

The infant’s bond with their primary caregiver is about trust and love. The connection with that person (usually Mommy) allows them to feel like they are safe and can rely on the person who is basically the only thing they know. It’s about touch and being there and can be seen in that tender stare they give you as you feed them.

Stage Two: Muscular Anal

Ages: 18 Months To 3 Years

Conflict: Autonomy vs Doubt

This stage focuses on self control and self confidence and Erickson gives toilet training as the greatest example of this conflict. He also points out that this is the stage where an overprotective parent can do the most damage. The child wants autonomy. We’re all familiar with the two hour wait because they have to tie their own shoes. We wait because in this stage, failure to reinforce these efforts will lead the child to doubt themselves and your trust in them.

Stage Three: Locomotor

Ages: 3 To 6 Years

Conflict: Initiative vs Guilt

This is all about independence and letting the child exert his/her initiative. This is the stage where carrying your car keys or helping Mommy in any way possible is very important. They are developing a sense of responsibility and limitations. They will try to do things they can’t and the response the parent gives them, encouragement or refusal, will allow the child to understand limitations without guilt.

Stage Four: Latency

Ages: 6 To 12 Years

Conflict: Industry vs Inferiority

This is about completion. Before this stage, we’re all familiar with the child beginning to do something, but then snap; he drops it and is on to something else. In this stage, completion and the pleasure it brings becomes crucial. This is greatly influenced by their introduction to school beyond day care. It is the coming together of mental and physical capabilities as well. Parents need to encourage their child to handle the different experiences of a home atmosphere and the atmosphere at school among others.

Stage Five: Adolescence

Ages: 12 To 18 Years

Conflict: Identity vs Role Confusion

This stage could be a book in itself; the teenage years. They are hard on everyone, but especially the child herself. They are aware that they will become a contributor to society (industry) and the search for who they are drives their actions and thoughts. The desire to know what it is they want and believe separate from what they’ve adopted from their parents is crucial to their self confidence.

Stage Six: Young Adulthood

Ages: 19 To 40 Years

Conflict: Psychosocial Development

Love relationships dominate this stage for all of us and relies heavily on our ability to solve the conflicts faced in stage five. Can you be intimate? Can you be open? Can you commit? Intimacy is referred to as the ability to make a personal commitment and doesn’t necessarily mean sex. Personal commitment, met with mutual satisfaction, make this a successful stage. If unable to handle this stage, an adult will resort to isolation.

Stage Seven: Middle Adulthood

Ages: 40 To 65 Years

Conflict: Generativity vs Stagnation

The words are getting bigger, but stay with me. Generativity is our ability to care for someone else which is mostly displayed in parenting. Specifically, it’s the ability to direct someone into society and the next generation. We don’t focus on death, but we begin to understand that we are high in the order of society and owe society something. If we haven’t dealt with our previous conflicts, we become stagnant and our lives won’t exhibit anything we can look back on.

Stage Eight: Maturity

Ages: 65 to Death

Conflict: Ego Integrity vs Despair

This is when we begin to reflect on our lives, accepting it for what it was. If we have done well in previous stages, especially stage seven, we can feel a sense of fulfillment and accept death as an unavoidable reality with dignity. If we haven’t done well, we can be filled with regret, despair over the time running out and fear of death.

When you read through the stages, it’s impossible not to identify them as you’ve experienced them or as you see your children experiencing them. However, Erickson’s theory is not without critics. Many say that it is too focused on infancy and childhood and isn’t very helpful for later in life. Others say it really applies to boys and not girls using Erickson’s belief (Freudian) that boys and girls naturally develop different personalities.

In general, Erickson’s Theory of Human Development is widely accepted and plays a major role in all human and psychological development studies and theories. The best advice is to use the theory as a framework or map for understanding and identifying what issues/conflicts unresolved lead to current behavior and preparing for the stages to come.

Learning to Cope with Depression

February 4th, 2009

A person with depression is not the only one affected with this mental and emotional disorder. Every person around the depressed patient is also affected. The emotional toll can destroy and shatter any relationship; this could also result in a loss of jobs and in a worst case scenario, can lead to killing oneself. Although there is no known cure for depression, there are treatments that can aid a depressed person to lead a better and productive life.

A person with depression needs a lot of support from the people he or she trusts. The family members and the friends is the best source of love and support. The best thing to do is to show some compassion and understanding, the person is sad enough as it is, they don’t need to feel alone and alienated.

Once a person has been diagnosed with depression, people should learn about the effects the disorder has on an afflicted person’s behavior and personality. This way, we won’t be shocked and taken aback by the changes in the person. We should not take personally whatever the depressed person does.

A person with depression should understand what is happening to him so that he or she could learn to accept his situation. If depression gets the best of a person he could lose his rational way of thinking. Knowing his or her options is also good because the depressed person will have hope.

Depression treatments can either be medication prescribed or therapies with a licensed or qualified psychiatrist or both. There is no need to be depressed about depression, many people with this ailment have lead healthy and productive lives.

Female Depression

January 16th, 2009

It is considered that women suffer from depression much more often, than men, and it’s more difficult for them to overcome this condition. Experts pick out 8 most popular kinds of female depression.

1. Post-natal

It is observed during several months right after childbirth. This kind of depression is caused by sharp changes in life style, constant dependence from other person and sense of increased responsibility. Often it’s very difficult for a young mother to blend with her new role quickly and correctly.

Way of struggle: don’t try to subdue yourself or play a role of a loving mother. This is quite normal, if you don’t sense any feelings towards your baby at first. There is time for everything. Now you have to get used to new changes and enter a new rhythm of life. And you will learn to cope with a role of mother with time, and you will do this very well. Don’t refuse from your relatives’ help. You need time to come to your senses after returning from maternity hospital.

2. Age-dependent

As a rule, women of climacteric age suffer from it. During this period, a hormonal background of organism changes, and quite often depressive condition is observed. Coming of menopause also brings a strong psychological pressure, and this may unsettle a woman.

Way of struggle: coming of climacteric does not mean the approaching of old age at all. Nobody knows about changes happened in you, except yourself. Cessation of menstruation is an absolutely natural process for a female organism, and you should not make a tragedy out of it. So, try not to change your previous way of life. Don’t also forget about hormonal therapy’s possibilities. You just should consult your doctor for sure.

3. Monthly

This kind of depression is also called premenstrual. Depressive condition can be observed as shortly before menstruation, as during or right after it, everything depends on a certain organism’s peculiarities.

Way of struggle: you will have no place to hide from monthly depression. Most likely, you have already noticed long ago, in which days of your cycle you can hardly control yourself. Try to relieve these days a little beforehand, don’t plan anything important and stay at home, if you can. It is not out of place to consult a gynaecologist: you may need a hormone replacement therapy or vitamin course.

4. Exhaustion

It is also called a depression of chronic tiredness. It is observed, when a woman overestimates her strengths and has increased responsibility for the duties she assumes. If you don’t alternate work with rest, then a moment comes, when you already cannot carry out previous volume of work and suffer because of this.

Way of struggle: you need a full rest, and you will not do with one day off. You need to get away from your work not only physically, but also mentally. And try to observe daily regimen after vacation, and don’t start working in intensive rhythm. You need to learn planning your powers, to be able to function constantly.

5. Reactive

Or, as it is also called, a depression of loss. It is caused by death of our close people. Many people think that they quarreled with their close ones shortly before their death or harmed their close people and did not manage to win forgiveness. Most serious cases are those when a person blames himself directly or marginally in his close person’s death.

Way of struggle: Try to understand that death is a natural and irreversible process. You need to accept it as inevitability as soon as possible. Don’t suppress your emotions, cry and scream, if you want. Believers find support in confession or just visit a church. Atheists can find help visiting psychotherapist. And the main thing is to remember that there’re still many close people who need you.

6. Dissatisfaction

At that, dissatisfaction can be both of sexual character and psychological one. When one suppresses any of his wishes too violently, then dissatisfaction is saved inside and leads to depression.

Way of struggle: of course, it’s better to satisfy all needs of your organism in time. But sometimes it’s impossible. If you suffer from sexual dissatisfaction, try to understand that love and sex are 2 different things. And you should not refuse from one, if you don’t have other. You also should not forget about a possibility of self-fulfillment. If you suffer from psychological dissatisfaction, it’s useful to keep a diary, where you will write all your unvoiced thoughts and feelings. By the way, paper is a very good interlocutor. It will not ever interrupt you and tell your secrets to anybody.

7. Medical

It is caused by excessive, not controlled by a doctor, taking of some medical preparations. In general, these are soporifics and especially demulcents, affecting central nervous system.

Way of struggle: firstly, you need to quit self-treatment and take any, even most harmless, preparations only under your doctor’s control. Secondly, if you were prescribed antidepressants, you need to keep to a diet closely. Many antidepressants lose their effect interacting with some foodstuff. Alcohol is categorically contra-indicated during treatment. Any alcoholic drinks, when combined with antidepressants, can cause sharp defects of cardiovascular system work. It’s almost impossible to cure medical depression without assistance. So, if you have found some depressive symptoms in you, consult a doctor immediately.

8. Circumstances

As a rule, it appears under most insignificant irritating factors in seared and psychically unstable people. Anything can serve as a reason of depressive condition: bad weather, good weather, discomfort conditions of life, TV news and any sounds.

Way of struggle: in this case, you will hardly cope with depressive condition by yourself. Most likely, as soon as you liquidate one irritating factor, another one will appear at once. And you will keep on going this way endlessly. So, it’s preferable to consult professionals for help. A professional will not only save you from a momentary depressive condition, but also will find a real reason of your psychological disorder.

Hats Off to Psychology Today !

January 8th, 2009

I recently reported on my obsessive compulsive behavior and how I found Psychology Today. That’s where I caught OCD, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

See http://www.psychologytoday.com/conditions/ocd.htm

Fortunately I didn’t catch the extreme related disease of trichotillomania which is “the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, eyebrows or other body hair.” Such an urge would be futile for me as I am as bald as Mount Baldy in the Uinta Mountains of Utah.

Anyway, I’ve saved one heck of a lot of time since I read the article on OCD at the stated reference. Here are some examples of daily time savings:

Not checking if I still have my car keys in my pocket while shopping: 3 minutes

Not paying attention to the thought I wish I were a millionaire: 7 minutes

Not checking again and again if the front, back, and garage doors are locked: 12 minutes

Paying no attention to the urge to draw up grandiose plans: 17 minutes

Ignoring the urge to write down 17 new article ideas: 10 minutes

Not checking to see if my wallet is still in my pocket: 6 minutes

Ignoring the thought that I sold Microsoft too soon on seven occasions: 4 minutes

Not thinking about my lack of expertise at option trading: 3 minutes

Not designing another direct mail get-rich scheme: 25 minutes

Not reading every word in junk mail: 17 minutes

Let’s see that is 104 minutes a day or almost two hours. Oh, I forgot a couple:

Not trying to memorize π to 50 decimal places: 12 minutes

Not starting a new novel: 4 minutes

Now that makes 120 minutes or 2 hours a day.

I think we can increase these time savings. Let’s see-

Wait! My wife told me to “Get off of it!”

Thanks, Psychology Today!

The Depression Diet Feel Better Naturally Without Gaining Weight!

January 4th, 2009

Depression is a serious illness that affects millions of Americans. Although many patients must manage their depression with medication and therapy, a good percentage of individuals with mild and moderate depression can successfully manage their symptoms with diet and exercise. This does not mean that their depression is “imaginary”. It just means that some individuals can manage their depression naturally, without the unpleasant side-effects of anti-depressant drugs. If you have depressive symptoms, check with your doctor and then try the depression diet and see if it lightens your mood!

The Depression Diet

Step 1

See your doctor first! I cannot stress this enough. Many serious medical conditions cause serious depressive symptoms. Here are some common illnesses that cause depression in many individuals. If you have an underlying medical disorder, like diabetes, it is imperative that you alert your doctor, so he/she can manage both illnesses together.

This is not an exhaustive list. A medical evaluation is always an important part of your diagnosis. Ask for a complete blood panel and a thyroid test. People with chronic disease have a much higher risk of developing depressive symptoms, so it is important to rule out other physical disease. Many medications have depressive side effects. Birth control pills, sleeping pills, and high blood pressure medication have all been shown to cause depression in some individuals. Alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drug use can also generate depressive symptoms.

• Thyroid disorders

• Epilepsy

• Diabetes

• Multiple sclerosis

• Stroke or Brain trauma

• Lyme disease

• Syphilis

• Huntington’s disease

• Parkinson’s disease

• Cancer of the pancreas

• Chemical Exposure

• Physical Trauma

• Childbirth/Pregnancy (post-partum depression)

Step 2

Start taking depression-targeted vitamins. Take a multi-vitamin every day, and invest in a good B-vitamin supplement. B vitamins have been clinically proven to help alleviate mild depressive symptoms, and those who are B vitamin deficient often show symptoms of depression as a side effect. Vitamin B9 (folic acid) may be the most important of all these vitamins. Up to 38% of people with depression have low folate levels and those with very low levels are usually the most depressed. Clinical research has shown that depressed individulas are usually deficient in nutrients essential for general health. Some good natural supplements for depression include:

•St John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is an herbal supplement that has shown great promise in relieving depression. European studies have shown success with anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and nerve pain. This herb is widely prescribed in Europe, and is available as a dietary supplement in the United States. St John’s Wort can interfere with the action of some prescription medications, so check with your doctor before taking this supplement.

•Omega-3 fatty acids, are naturally present in fish, nuts, whole grains, beans and other seeds. They are also readily available in supplement form. These fatty acids play a crucial role in the function of serotonin and dopamine, two of the most important “mood” chemicals in the brain.

•Vitamin C has been shown to help the body metabolize other nutrients essential for boosting immune function and fighting depression. It has also been shown to alleviate the dry mouth associated with prescription anti-depression medication.!

•All B vitamins, including folic acid, are absolutely essential for the treatment and management of depression. Eat your leafy greens, and take a B supplement!

Step 3

Switch to depression-fighting foods, avoid caffeine, sweets, and all white flour. All of these boost insulin blood levels, and caffeine suppresses serotonin; an essential brain chemical for the treatment of depression. Do not purchase ice cream, cakes, or other sugary treats. If you have to force yourself to go out and get them, you’ll eat these ‘bad’ foods less often. Here are some foods that can help you fight depression and feel better!

•Eat protein three times a day (sausage, eggs, chicken, tofu, beef, cheese, lamb, cottage cheese, nuts)

•Eat only complex carbohydrates and fruit (beans, fruits, vegetables, whole wheat bread)

•Drink lots and LOTS of water! This seems like the easiest thing to do, but so few Americans get enough water every day. If you drink soda, coffee, and other diuretics, you must increase your water intake. Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue, depression, irritability, and muscle pain.

Step 4

Exercise! Simple exercise, even just walking outside 30 minutes a day, has been shown to have a tremendous impact on depressive symptoms. Some people can manage mild and moderate depression with exercise and diet alone. Syd Baumel, the author of ‘Dealing With Depression Naturally’, has said that, “Basically… being physically active and being depressed are very largely mutually incompatible.”

In 2005, the journal of Biological Psychiatry published a study that showed certain foods and supplements treat depression even better than some prescription medications. Even if you are already on prescription medication, healthy eating and adding anti-depression supplements may greatly enhance your mood, and help stabilize mood swings and depression.

How do You Know When You Forget Something if You Cannot Remember What You Are Looking For?

December 25th, 2008

Have you ever had a conversation and you forgot something and wondered why you forgot that particular fact at all? Well even more interesting is that if you forgot the fact how did you even remember that you knew it in the first place you see? Well many would say if you completely forget something and cannot even remember you have stored that information in the first place then that is a sign of Alzheimer’s, but you would not know you are coming down with the disease because you would not have remembered the thing that you no longer know, you know what I am saying here?

Now then have you ever considered why you forgot something? Perhaps the circumstances you learned it in are no longer present and it was attached to another piece of data, but during your conversation you came looking for it going the wrong direction and there simply was no connection there to get to the information, yet if you quickly considered or placed yourself in your mind at the point at which you received that information, you could more easily and probably retrieve it rather easily you see?

If you forgot something and you know you forgot it you are not going crazy and there is nothing wrong with you, but you might needs to think on that thought and relate it to other thoughts to help create multiple connections to the information you might need at a later date. So consider this in 2006.
