Default Retirement Age is set to be scrapped from April 6 of the next year based on a decision of the government. This move of the government has been faced with major opposition. One of the fiercest critics is Melissa Edmond, a lawyer at Furley Page, a
Melissa says that raising the DRA would have been a more sensible thing to do. The adverse effects this move can have are listed below.
1. The withdrawal or decrease in employee benefits as a cost cutting method by the employers to avoid providing the same to over DRA employees.
2. Blocking of jobs
3. Reduction of the opportunities of the youngsters in the job market.
4. Age discrimination and unwarranted dismissal to apply pressure on the workers to quit their jobs
5. The blocking of workforce planning
Melissa says that the employers now have only two ways to deal with the situation. The employer can accept the DRA scrapping and carry out only those retirements that will be completed by October 1, 2011 and those that have been notified prior to April 6, 2011.
The employer can also retain Drabbet this has the potential to become a legal hassle later as the employees can legally challenge this. The employer will be forced to defend his stand of DRA retainment which can be very hard to do.
There are also a lot of appreciation being awarded to this idea. Michelle Mitchell, the director of Age UK says that this is a fantastic decision, which will benefit the entire society.
