The Effects of Retin A for Acne Treatment

April 30th, 2009

Much recent evidence points to the beneficial effects of Retin A in treating more serious cases of acne, as well as aged, sun-damaged skin and stretch marks. However, as with most prescription medications, there are potential adverse reactions that you should be aware of before you begin treatment.

Retin A, or tretinoin, is a derivative of vitamin A and is available in a variety of forms. Retin A cream is weaker than the gel as the medication is less able to penetrate the skin in cream form. It acts to unplug acne follicles and bring the pimple to the surface, as well as prevent new pimple formation.

Since one of the effects of Retin A cream applications is to extrude the pimple, it initially appears as if it is making the situation worse. As such dermatologists recommend that you give it time to work, sometimes up to a year or more for maximum Retin A results.

Although minor side effects of Retin A are quite common, they are usually mild and will subside within six to eight weeks. They may include unusual darkening of the skin, slight discoloration or redness. Slight peeling of the skin has also been reported in many cases as has swelling. You should avoid direct sunlight in the early stages of using Retin A, as it will dramatically increase your chances of sunburn.

Don’t let the adverse effects of Retin A discourage you from discussing this treatment regimen with your dermatologist; for serious cases, this can be the only remedy that works for you. Retin A results speak to the efficacy of this medication in getting severe acne breakouts under control.

If you have blemished skin you might want to try natural treatment options before you look into potent prescription applications. There are natural formulas with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can be as effective as a Retin A cream or gel.

There are many other treatment options for acne, from benzoyl peroxide OTC medications such as Clearasil, Oxy and Proactiv to oral drugs like Accutane and you should certainly check with a dermatologist to find out which is right for you. Retin A results are quite favorable as are those for some natural solutions, it’s just a matter of figuring out which is right for you.

David Bloom is an avid health enthusiast and a regular contributor to a variety of health websites. He is the author of Natural Acne Treatments and Effects of Retin A, a blog dedicated to the treatment of acne, covering conventional and natural remedies for clearing up blemished skin.

Understanding Acne in Puberty Stage

April 26th, 2009

Puberty acne develops from a few simple steps. First, teenage acne occurs when for some unknown reason or combination of reasons, hair follicles, also known as pores, become blocked. Although the exact combination of reasons that pores become clogged may not be fully known, many contributing elements for teenagers and adults alike can include:

* genetics (whether or not there is a history of acne problems and if so, to what extent)
* hormones
* dietary and vitamin make up (or lack of /deficiency)
* stress related factors

Other denominators in the development of puberty acne could include factors like how your body normally rids itself of its dead skin cells. And influences that may be working against this regularity. For example, climate and other environmental factors, overall body health at the time of the outbreak, and your hormones and their effect on your own body’s sebum production (especially for females).

Second, the normal dead skin cells that combine with your body’s natural sebum oil as it drains through the skin’s surface become clogged in these blocked pores. This substance becomes somewhat sticky, further clogging the passageway.

Third, bacteria begins to grow around these clogged areas. As a normal reaction, your body’s white blood cells attack the bacteria, fighting it and pushing it out of the body.

And forth, the resulting growths during this 14-day to 21-day battle are called microcomedones. Microcomedones turn into comedones, commonly referred to as blemishes, pimples or acne.

There are basically four types of puberty acne: whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and nodules.

Whiteheads are when the sebum (oil) and resulting bacteria are trapped below the skin’s surface and you can actually see a white head appear above (or near popping out of) the skin.

Blackheads are when the sebum and resulting bacteria are only partially trapped, slowly draining out the surface and turning black because of your skin’s melanin or pigmentation. In the absence of either white or blackhead are generally (but not always) smaller pimples. And the often deeper, boil-like lesions are referred to as nodules.

All forms of puberty acne can be mild, moderate or severe. Typically, mild puberty acne is visible in the form of whiteheads and blackheads, sometimes pimples.

With moderate puberty acne, more pimples and pustules are present on the face, some may appear on the back or chest.

And with severe puberty acne, many nodules develop, often large and sore, over parts of the face, back, chest and other body areas. This type of acne can lead to scarring.

Actually, lesser cases of puberty acne have been followed by scarring. So for those with possible nodular acne, seeking advice from a healthcare provider as soon as possible is recommended.

A gender issue to note is that males more often have the severe form of acne rather than females, due to their hormones. And the areas where they tend to break out most frequently are unfortunately more difficult to treat, the chest and back.

Look for Home Gyms that Will Last

April 25th, 2009

With so many darn home gyms available and permeating advertizing on TV how in the world is somebody suppose to adjudicate what home gym to purchase. If you are anything like me you’ve in all probability purchased a couple of all the rage products believing that you will utilize them, simply to recognize that you really just bought a machine to perch your dirty clothes on. I have observed the hard way that I should look for particular characteristics. The first one I will speak about in this series is durability.

It’s true that the selection as well as variety in home gyms is almost too much to handle. I can for certain understand why individuals might just think to purchase whatsoever piece of home gym equipment is publicized or appears hot. Surely, esthetics is part of how we may select a home gym. Nevertheless, looks ought to be the least criteria to use.

Home gyms come varied sizes. Nevertheless, when looking at home gyms I think the number 1 criteria should be durability. Lack of durability, of course, you will find yourself in the market place for a another home gym soon after buying the original. However, even worse is the fact that psychologically when you are working out you recognise the gym is flimsy and unknowingly ease up on workouts with intensity. Intensity is a essential ingredient in having a good workout.

So, the essential criteria to look at when picking out home gym equipment is durability. There are umteen home gyms that are intentionally produced not to last. The price might be luring, but if it fails after just a few workouts then it is money wasted.

Growing up with Teen Acne

April 24th, 2009

Life as a teenager is never easy. There’s the struggle with self image, self esteem, self doubt and finding you own identity. Not to mention there is always the unavoidable cruelty and judgement of other teens if you’re a little “different”. That’s what made growing up with acne so hard for me, and I’m sure for the countless other teenagers out there afflicted with persistent facial acne.

Teen Acne : My Story

My lifelong battle (hence far) started at the ripe young age of 14. Up until then I had enjoyed the even toned, glowing and blemish free skin of youth. Just when looks started to really matter to me, and for that matter to all of my adolescent peers, I experienced my first acne breakout. I was in a frenzy. How cruel could nature be? Wasn’t it enough that I was filling out, growing breasts and becoming a mature, curvy “woman” all of a sudden?

Adding to this sudden onslaught of a hormonally charged set of physical changes seemed like more than I could handle. Especially when the “first little breakout” never went away, and consistently got worse no matter what I used on my face. What started as a few pimples localized only to my chin began to manifest itself in deeper, more cyst-like pustules that were actually painful, and began to disseminate to my nose, forehead and cheeks like wildfire.

My hormones had taken off full throttle in a matter of a few weeks, and by the time I turned 15, I had already been living with moderate to severe acne for several months. To add insult to injury, apparently I was one of the first teens in my small ninth grade class to actually have real (and very noticeable) problems with acne. Of course, my classmates were soon to follow, but up until then I was the unlucky “pioneer” of the teen acne acedemic!

I was a painfully shy teen to begin with, so adding chronic and many times severe acne to my situation only made me more self conscious. I remember countless days of waking up with an especially bad skin day, most of the time pinpointed to certain times in my menstrual cycle, and not wanting to go to school simply because I felt as though I looked like a “freak” or a “monster”.

I completely withdrew myself from socialization in most cases, making my high school years barely tolerable. I’m not blaming all of my high school angst on acne, but it certainly added to my already negative perception of myself. It made me feel outwardly ugly and ashamed of who I was.

I do feel that acne had a profound impact on my self image during high school, and prevented me from enjoying my youth time and time again. Silly? Maybe, but I think we all know how rough adolescence can be already. Something like acne can really exacerbate any self esteem and socialization issues during this awkward period of adjustment.

The Acne Treatments Available “Back Then”

I tried all of the over the counter acne creams, cleansers and cleansing pads, but to no avail. None of them worked on my skin to clear the acne. In fact, back in the late eighties and early nineties, most over the counter acne products were very harsh and drying. Needless to say, many times I ended up with dry, red peeling skin on top of acne bumps. Couple that with awkward teenage makeup application and the heavy powders and foundations that were available back then (when a matte finish was the makeup style), and what you have is not a pretty sight.

I could get into my vicious cycle of dermatologist administered treatments starting at the age of sixteen, but that is just whole different article all together. The bottom line is, many of the treatments available only address the problem of acne temporarily, and become worthless once treatment is stopped. They also have side effects.

Let’s just say, I’m glad I now enjoy virtually pimple free skin at the age of 31 through a series of hit and miss acne treatments, I think I’ve finally found my “true skin”.

Tiscali’s Future Uncertain

April 23rd, 2009

The future of the Italian based broadband service provider, Tiscali, is in the doldrums, as it has not been able to clear pending debts with its lenders. As a result, the company’s broadband customers, including 1.8 million people in the UK, may not be able to continue with their connection in the near future.

Customers have already started facing problems with Tiscali’s services. Earlier, customers who had their email accounts on Tiscali’s screaming.net domain had their accounts frozen after the provider did not renew the domain. The company later restored the service, providing relief to many customers who could have ended up losing important data.

A Tiscali representative has confirmed that the provider has prepared a proposal to clear its debts, ready to be presented at the next shareholders’ meeting, and that the company will continue to operate as usual both in Italy and the UK. However, the situation does not look very promising. The customers are understandably worried, and the suppliers would also be getting jittery in dealing with the company. For information and advice on switching your broadband provider, click here for info on the best broadband.

The company statement regarding its damage-control plan was released after Ernst & Young (an independent auditor) cautioned Tiscali that it could continue to operate only if it successfully settled all its debts. With increasing concern from all quarters, it will be interesting to see what course of action the company chooses.

Acne Treatment Products - Proper Use

April 19th, 2009

Simply put, acne is caused by oil glands that produce excessive oil and block your pores, causing skin inflammation–pimples–or acne when it appears in excess. Finding the correct acne treatment for your skin is the first step in your acne treatment plan.

However, the problem with buying over the counter acne products is knowing which ones will work best for you. The stressful part of deciding on which acne treatment to use is A) people develop acne for various reasons, and B) there are hundreds of acne products on the market to tackle the different problems. This confuses a lot of people and often leads to excessive spending.

There are a few things to consider when looking for an acne treatment product:

*Acne treatment products are often sold in a series; and if not, there are usually complementary products you can purchase from the same brand.

*Acne treatment is not a one-time thing, it requires certain products that combine to form a “regimen.” These products generally include face washes, cleansers, and night and day creams.

*In order to successfully eliminate your acne, you will need to stick to a “regimen,” using your products in the order required for the products.

Your best bet is to purchase a “series” along with the additional acne blemish treatment products. After that, it is up to you to create a manageable regimen.

Although it may seem common sense, many people simply have no idea how to properly care for their complexion. So, given that, here’s the best way to start.

First, you will need to wash your face. This helps open your pores and clear them of any excess dirt. You should try not to be harsh on your skin when washing. You should wash gently and then pat dry. Once you finish this step, you will need to use a cleanser to remove dirt, grime, and oil that was not removed by the face wash - often called a toner. You will certainly feel the difference. Depending on what time of the day it is, you should use the appropriate cream. This will nourish your skin while simultaneously attacking acne. You are now done. Repeat this regimen daily and do not skip any parts.

Other than this, you should try to avoid certain things that will make you break out, such as applying large amount of make-up. This will only block your pores and cause acne to stay around longer.

Find the acne treatment product that works best for your skin type and situation. Follow the directions and start your daily regimen to begin seeing clearer skin.

Preventing Scarring From Acne

April 18th, 2009

Almost everyone will suffer from acne at one time during their lives. Acne comes in many forms, pimples - blackheads and whiteheads are what we commonly see, but if these become infected with bacteria they can turn into boil like pustules that can be painful as well as unsightly.

Acne is most common in teens where hormones are upsetting the bodies balance and over productive oil glands along with clogged pores cause the start of pimples. While pimples will eventually go away, acne scarring can have longer lasting effects.

The most effective way to prevent acne scarring is to leave the acne alone. Don’t touch your pimples or pop them as this can create scarring. Of course, reducing the incidence of acne and helping to keep it in control with proper cleaning methods as well as diet can go a long way towards reducing the temptation of pimple popping and thus, reduce the risk of scarring.

The best thing you can do to clear your acne is to develop a proper cleaning routine. This involves washing your skin with a gentle soap twice a day and can mean using acne treatment
products during the day and night. In addition to washes, you might try skin
exfoliates, day and night creams and facial scrubs.

If your doctor has prescribed medicine for your acne, always follow his directions for use. Never use harsh chemicals or soaps on your face.

It’s important to make your acne treatment routine acne easy enough for you
to maintain. If you think that you don’t have enough time for your regimen, then it is vital that you make more time, scale down the regimen or live with the acne. Maybe you need to get up a bit earlier or cut out half hour of TV at night, but won’t having a clear complexion be worth it?

If you have a really bad case of acne, you may need to seek the help of a dermatologist. He can recommend prescriptions that may help and in some cases you may want to consider laser treatment that literally burns the bacteria out of the skin. This helps to unclog your pores and kills the bacteria which is the main pimple causing culprit. If you don’t want to use chemical drugs or lasers, you may want to explore more natural herbal remedies for your skin.

If you do have unsightly scarring, you can get treatment. Scars from acne are deep inside the skin and acne laser scarring treatments can help to correct this in many cases. However, you do need to be careful when opting for this type of treatment as it can be expensive.

If you do decide the cost is worth it, then choose where you get the treatment carefully. Like most anything else, you get what you pay for and you need to pick a reputable doctor and not go with the best bargain. Bear in mind that you will need to pay a reasonable amount of money if you want good treatment results. You may need several sessions depending on how severe your scars are.

The benefits of treating acne scarring is that you get clearer, healthy skin. Your acne is not prone to returning because the laser treatment kills the bacteria and shrinks the glands that produce the oil which blocks your pores. Once you have the treatment, however you do need to make a commitment to yourself to take good care of your skin and eat right so you can have a clear and healthy complexion for life.
