Web Conferencing Software - Choosing Your Application

August 28th, 2008

It is worth bearing in mind that, when you are deciding which web conferencing application to utilize, none of the applications currently available will do everything well.

Each system has its own strengths and weaknesses and it is therefore important for you to identify what you hope to gain from your web conferencing application. The first step you should take is to draw up a list of essential features - decide what the most important aspects of web conferencing are to you and what you hope to gain from your system.

By identifying what is most important to you, you can narrow down your field of selection to those vendors who are supplying a product that most closely matches your requirements. By immediately discarding those that do not match your criteria, you will find yourself considering a far more manageable number of applications.

Communication: Meetings, Webcasts and Webinars
For example, if the key function you want your web conferencing application to perform is that of communication then you require an application that will allow you to exchange with others. An application that has the capability to host meetings, transmit webcasts and hold training seminars will be required.

Different web conferencing applications have different capabilities, some allowing you to invite hundreds of delegates to your seminar, others allowing a maximum of say, ten. Levels of interaction vary too so be very clear about what functions you will need your application to be able to perform.

Before investing in your new system you should thoroughly review exactly what each provider is offering to ensure it meets with your requirements.

Vendors:

Vendors of this type of application include:

* Centra

* Netbriefings

* Placeware

* Smiletiger

* Spartacom

Online Collaboration and Project Management

Online collaboration software is particularly effective for project management. These applications allow users to share files and documents, to view files at the same time and update documents in real time. Previously, this level of collaboration could only be achieved by being physically present in the same location but online collaboration applications are extremely effective.

Vendors:

Vendors of this type of application include:

* Genesys

* Interwise

* Viditel

* WebEx

You need to consider too, whether or not your chosen application will be compatible with your existing software and operating platform. This information will be readily available from the application vendor. Also, do you have sufficient broadband capability to run your chosen application?

The cost, of course, is a major consideration when deciding upon your web conferencing application and will undoubtedly influence your ultimate decision. Applications range from the elementary (some can even be set up with a plug-in the likes of Yahoo Messenger) to the most sophisticated systems that will allow broadcasting to hundreds of delegates.

When deciding how much to spend, take into account how much money you are already spending in terms of time and money on travel. The chances are, if you choose your application sensibly, you will earn back its cost in a relatively short period of time.

“Purpose” in Amsall’s Success Mindset Tripod

August 28th, 2008

Here are the 3 elements of the “Purpose” leg in Amsall’s
Success Mindset Tripod :

1. Clarity of Purpose or Know Yourself

2. High Value of Purpose or Love Yourself

3. Unity of Purpose or Agree with Yourself

1. CLARITY OF PURPOSE = KNOW YOURSELF

For thousands of years, both before and after Socrates,
all human cultures have been repeating: “Know Yourself”.

Self-awareness and self-discovery: the starting point of
your personal self-growth campaign.

Now here is my take on “know yourself”: The part of
“know yourself” I am really interested in is “know what
(or who) you want to be, or what you want to get”.

To my mind, it is more important than knowing what
(or who) you actually are.

It is essential for setting and achieving goals, etc.

Because ultimately, you are what you decide to be
and you get what you decide to get .

Know what you want to be or what you want to have.

Consider this as a challenge that you must clearly define
and take up!

Decide what you want to be or have, what changes you
want in your life, where you want changes to take place etc.

Strangely enough, many people don’t know what they
EXACTLY want, or, which is the same, they find it very
difficult to clearly define it.

Do they only realize that “a problem well posed is a
problem half solved”?

Nobody should know you, your wants, desires, intentions
etc. better that you do.

Always remember that on every thing that concerns your
own life and what works for you,

“you and only YOU are THE EXPERT,

you are fully capable of achieving your goals”

Once you know yourself, you can set better goals, define
your visions and desires, take more action towards the
realization of your goals, make better decisions, and use
your natural strengths more fully.

Focus on knowing your future, intended, desired self i.e.
You must be very clear and specific regarding what you
want to become and/or what you want to have and also
why you want it so bad.

Also try to find out what exacly will happen to you once
you get what you want, i.e. your emotions, the changes
in your life, the impact on your life etc.

2. HIGH VALUE OF PURPOSE = LOVE YOURSELF

Whatever you may have heard to the contrary, it is very
nice and healthy to have the highest opinion of yourself.
According to Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler: there is scientific
evidence that “The more you like yourself, the more you
will accomplish, and the smarter and healthier you will be.”

To which one of my mentors, the great Denis Waitley adds:
“Realize that the most important opinion about you is the one
that you hold. Ultimately, nobody else is responsible for your
life but you. Nobody else is accountable for your actions but
you. Therefore, nobody’s opinion about you is more important
than yours.”

If you want to succeed in life, one paramount condition is
that your opinion about you is high, even extremely high.

That is called high self-esteem, is an essential component
of a positive self-image, and gives high value to your purpose.

You know you DESERVE to get whatever you want. And this
gives high value and justification to your purpose.

Believe it or not, your can build the self-image you want,
almost from scratch. You can literally acquire a given quality
simply by AFFIRMING that you actually have that quality!

I can assure you that if you repeat it often enough to
“internalize” it and impress (or imprint) it in you mind, you
will acquire it. It will be yours, it will be part of YOU, an
integral part of your personality.

If you find it difficult to love yourself as you are, why not
build yourself a brand-new personality, with all the qualities
you would find loveable!

Loving yourself means self-acceptance, self-pride,
self-esteem, self-confidence, etc.

3. UNITY OF PURPOSE = AGREE WITH YOURSELF

Who is the one and only person you cannot afford NOT to
agree with?

Your spouse, your parents, your kids, the President (or Queen
or King or Emperor), your boss, your employees, your friends,
your colleagues, your religious or spiritual leader, your
community leader?

None of all these!

There is one and only ONE person you MUST agree with
if you want to be successful in life, whether healthwise,
moneywise, or relationshipswise.

And that person is YOU!

Let me hasten to say that this has nothing to do with
selfishness.

In fact, once you agree with yourself, you find it very easy
to agree with anybody else.

Happy and harmonious relationships with other people
(interpersonal) can only be built based on a perfect
relationship with yourself (intrapersonal).

The same goes for “Know yourself” and “Love yourself”.

Agreeing with yourself means serenity, peace of mind,
self-control, integrity (your thoughts, words and actions are
in seamless alignment), enhanced self-esteem, which
result in self-reliance, self-confidence, responsibility, and
accountability.

Also remember that trust, including self-trust and faith in
yourself are based on integrity.

You only become “YOU” when your thoughts, actions,
words, prayers, wishes are aligned, and that’s when you
get all you want.

Your purpose is laser-focused, there are no “internal
contradictions”, no doubts, no hesitation.

When you agree with yourself, you become a “concentrated”
person, so concentrated that you are “heavier” than an
ordinary person.

You become a magnet, people find you fascinating,
charismatic, literally irresistible, and whatever you want,
you just “go get it”: You become a real “go-getter”!

Agree with yourself, and you’ll have the door of Success
wide open in front of you.

Unity of purpose is like having people pulling all in one
direction.

Agreeing with yourself is another crucial element of your
Success Mindset Tripod .

Mr. Handyman

August 27th, 2008

First thing Saturday morning I decided to fix the washing machine. This decision had not been reached lightly. The cold water pressure was weak so I had checked with two experts at work (i.e., they had both owned washing machines at one time or another) and determined that it was a sticky solenoid. I grabbed my toolbox and told my wife what I was planning.

“It’ll be fixed in ten minutes,” I explain as I head down to the basement. Meanwhile, she is looking up the number of a ‘24 hour emergency plumbing service’ and entering it into the speed-dialing function of the telephone.

“Shouldn’t I call the plumber?” she asks, making it obvious that she doesn’t understand men. Of course, she has her reasons - I’ve had some bad experiences. In fact, I’ve yet to tackle a home improvement project that has actually improved the home.

But today I was feeling confident. I carefully removed every screw from the back of the washing machine only to discover that it still wouldn’t come off. So, using the largest screwdriver I could find as leverage, I applied gentle pressure until suddenly there was a god-awful screech followed by two loud snaps and the back of the washing machine flies off like a cork out of a champagne bottle and smashes against the concrete wall with a thud that shakes the house.

I hear the basement door open above me. “Should I call the plumber?”

“We don’t need a plumber, everything is going according to plan,” I assure her.

Of course, I’m not exactly sure what the plan is. The back of the washing machine is filled with enough wires and hoses to launch the space shuttle and I have absolutely no idea where to begin. So I slowly begin removing parts, looking for anything which might remotely resemble a solenoid, which is a cylindrical object which can be magnetized (I looked it up in the dictionary).

Every hour or so the basement door opens. “Should I call the plumber?”

Finally, with head held low, I humbly tell her, “It’s time to call a plumber.”

Personally, I believe I was on the verge of figuring the whole thing out, but I could tell that she was starting to get nervous. A short time later Mr. Smarty-pants Plumber arrives and views the carnage.

“What the hell happened here?” he asks in disbelief.

I tell him the only thing that pops into my head. “Vandals. We’ve been having some problems in the neighborhood.”

“Must have been a whole gang of them to have caused this much damage,” he suggests and I can only nod my head in agreement.

He continues to review the scene of destruction, occasionally muttering “Hmmm” under his breath. Somehow, I intuitively know that every “hmmm” is costing me an additional fifty dollars.

Finally, Mr. Overpriced Plumber starts putting everything back together again until, like magic, the washing machine is back in one piece and pushed against the wall.

“Exactly what were you trying to do?” Mr. Couldn’t-make-it-as-an-electrician asks as he’s calculating a bill larger than a small country’s gross national product.

I seize the opportunity to show him he’s not dealing with just any goober who walked in off the street. “The cold water pressure was weak,” I explain. “Sticky solenoid.”

“Uh huh,” he responds and reaches behind the machine and twists off a hose. He taps the nozzle against the palm of his hand until a black, gooey glob of sludge oozes out. Then, with a final twist, he reattaches the hose.

“Your filter was clogged.”

Best Laptops Officially Mass Market

August 27th, 2008

Until recently, gaming notebooks were normally custom made by select retailers. As I remember they were not really the best selling notebooks but as they were more significantly costly they were the best profit generating products. These popular notebooks were just too expensive. Had you been a power hungry user they were basically the best laptop computers you could purchase. They probably weren’t best sellers though because I reckon us people buy laptop computers that we can easily afford. As larger brands see the opening in the gaming notebook market, stuff looks to have altered.

In comparison to the tiny resellers these companies are aware that they can get even more margin. Margins have been so slim as of late that this is a good opportunity to get more cash by selling hardware. I am quite confident that people would buy laptop computers if mass marketed by these large manufacturers. Little companies definitely have their work cut out for them now. I guess once it becomes mass marketed it will lose some of the desirability. In addition the familiar brand name will give consumers greater confidence.

In my view these brands are bringing out the best laptop computers at this point in time. I still anticipate that smaller system builders will deduct significant support from this. I can determine the service of being able to customize the notebook computer to be an important purchasing factor. Such buyers are generally tech savvy and can compare all the minute details. Often these sorts of purchasers are more partial to the speed rather than the design.

This will be interpreted as a good change for the consumer. The competitiveness between the established players should drive prices down when they seek to distinguish from one another. Even though that is my view on it, its just my opinion and quite possibly not what will happen. I am not confident if the whole price of notebooks will be reduced but new portables are always at particular prices. We will find out what we can anticipate from the gaming notebook sectors large brands.

Boy Scouts of America and the Gay Fringe

August 24th, 2008

We have all heard about the gay and lesbian communities trials and tribulations, we have all seen their Gay Parades on TV and we all know that each week they come up with something else to keep the issue of gay marriage in the news.

One thing that bothers me when they attack Ford Motor Company during an Automaker economic crunch is that it hurts American Jobs. Indeed when they attacked the Boy Scouts it hurts American Kids. Recently in an online forum this debate came up and Jen who is a member of the gay and lesbian community criticized me for helping the Boy Scouts in a fundraiser car wash.

Jen stated; “The Boy Scouts of America is an explicitly homophobic organization. It is not helping “the community” to support it. In fact, it’s harming the community.”

Jen, I completely disagree, as I learned to fly in the Boy Scout Aviation Explorers and got my pilots license at 17-years old. The Boy Scouts of America is set up like a Franchise and many of the Boy Scout Groups are run from youth group Church organizations, but not all. Certainly they have the prerogative to run things their way. To say that helping kids earn money in a Car Wash Fundraiser;

http://www.carwashguys.com/fundraisers/LAschools.html

So they can go to the annual Jamboree is not helping the community is utter BS. Those kids need not be dragged down due to a squabble between parents and the G&L Community is ridiculous and utter hokum. Jen you state: ” The BSA teach a huge number of children that being gay is wrong. It’s one of the most widespread propagandists for anti-queer hate around. For queer kids who get involved, it only re-enforces their own self-hatred, leading some to more years in the closet than they otherwise would have spent.”

There is no such thing as a queer kid, kids are too young to understand their emotions, hormones or preferences at young ages and to indoctrinate them into anything other than allowing a normal heterosexual relationship to occur can cause depression, being outcaste, suicide and mental issues later when they are too confused to know what is up. Experimenting as a teen with whatever is not being a Lesbian or gay it is merely growing up, but telling kids it means they are gay for life is simply not so. Think on this.

Hot and Cold Poker

August 22nd, 2008

There’s nothing worse for a pokern player who starts off a tournament circuit hot, and then hits a wall. Getting that first poker win can be a real high, but it can also block rational thinking and make it appear as though the game of poker is easier or requires less luck than it really does. The odds can get a bit odd in the mind of a dopamine enhanced poker player, unfortunately, especially if that first win is a big one.

So when a player doesn’t fare as well on the second round of a tournament, it can be a bit more jarring than it might have been otherwise. This can lead to a cascade effect as the negative, irrational emotions resulting from that high and low dynamic begin to change the player’s playing style. What was once a level-headed poker player has now become an unhinged, ill-betting player, and that can soil the game for them in the long run.

Your best bet is step back and remember that odds play a huge role in poker, and the best players are aware that odds never change, unlike emotions. So next time you feel the game getting away from you, pause, take a breath, and maybe fold a few hands even if it doesn’t feel quite right. Your bankroll will thank you.

A Reason for the Season or How To Keep Your Sanity During the Holidays

August 20th, 2008

Typically most business leaders and entrepreneurs face the same challenge everyone faces during the holidaystoo much to do and too little time! You need to keep your business going, at least for the majority of December, yet you have added responsibilities taking up your time: professionally, you have to deal with year-end financial concerns, employees requesting time off, and office decorations and parties; personally, you have home decorations, presents to buy, and maybe travel plans. So how do you keep your sanity and actually pull it all offand manage to have a happy holiday?

One way may be to re-focus on the reason for the season. What are the winter holidays all about? How do you get off the treadmill of activity and commercialism and back into the heart of these times of sacredness and celebration? What is the reason for the season for you personally? This is something that may be different for everyone, so take a few minutes before the hustle begins to look inside yourself and remember what the holidays mean to you. Here are some ideas that may help you reconnect with the spirit of the season:

1.Giving & Receiving: When you focus on how you can give, you wind up receiving so much in return. Giving, however, doesn’t need to be about how much you spend on presents. Consider giving as an expression of caring and a way of saying thank you. The bonus you give to staff or contractors says you appreciate their loyalty and exceptional service. The gift you give family members and friends says thank you for being in my life. Additionally, you need to be a good receiver, since those who appreciate you need to show it too. So accept that purple striped tie that you find obnoxious or the box of chocolates you can’t eat, with grace and a smile.

2.Gratitude: Of course, Thanksgiving is the perfect time for expressing your thanks or gratitude. It’s unfortunate that we need the holidays to remember to be grateful for what we have and to express gratitude to those we appreciate. When sending holiday greetings to business associates, employees, family, or friends, take the time to add a personal note and tell each one what you value about them. It works wonders for both of you.

3.Connection: What a great excuse to spend time with those you usually don’t have time for. At work, you’ll enjoy being with your co-workers and staff in a social context and getting to know them in a deeper way. This in turn can only enhance your working relationship. At home, you may connect with family members and loved ones you only see at holidays. This keeps that contact alive and replenishes your heart.

4.Celebration: It’s time to party. New Year’s Eve is especially a great time to kick up your heels, drink champagne, and dance the night away. You work hard all year, so you deserve some playtime. Get into the spirit of the New Year and celebrate in the way that works for you. Some enjoy partying while others prefer a quiet celebration: a hike in the woods, a walk on the beachtime to reflect on the year past and the year ahead. Create the observance of these occasions with meaningful activities.

5.Renewal: Holidays are everyone’s excuse to take a break, and that means you too! Your body and your brain need some time off when you don’t think at all about your work. Allow yourself at least a few days at Thanksgiving, Christmas/Chanukah, and the New Year to wind down. With a rested body and mind, you’ll be full of energy and creativity for a terrific year ahead.

Affluent Turn Cautious in Outlook for Personal Spending and the Economy

August 20th, 2008

The Affluent Market Tracking Study #8, the just released Fall 2005 report in a continuing series of twice-yearly surveys by The American Affluence Research Center (AARC), reveals several important changes in the 12- month economic outlook and spending plans of the wealthiest 10% of Americans, the 11 million households representing about half of all consumer income and spending and a third of the total US economy.

While the affluent still have a somewhat positive outlook toward current business conditions, their outlook for future economic conditions is now neutral. This may reflect concern about the potential negative economic consequences of the Gulf coast hurricanes (risk of increased inflation, higher interest rates, and a recession) that dominated the news media in September, when the survey was conducted.

The affluent are far less positive than they were six months ago, continuing a decline that began in Spring 2004 after reaching a record high in the Fall 2003 survey. The composite Affluent Consumer Expectations (ACE) index for economic conditions 12 months from now had set a record low this past spring at 116 and has now dropped further to the neutral level of 100.

The affluent also indicated modest declines in their plans for major purchases and their expected changes in spending for 17 different products and services. Their projected $57 billion in expenditures for holiday gifts (25% of the estimated total holiday gift market) is 1.6% below 2004 spending levels. This contrasts with a 5% increase projected in an early October survey of the total adult population for the National Retail Federation.

There is some indication of a reduction in the plans for major expenditures in the next 12 months, with 44% of respondents reporting no such plans. Plans for home remodeling, cruises, and acquisition of vacation residences declined from their Spring 2005 record highs. Plans to acquire motor vehicles and boats showed slight increases, while plans to purchase an existing home as a primary residence increased to a record high.

The AARC surveys track spending plans over the next 12 months for 17 categories of goods and services, including major appliances, home computers, furniture/furnishings, entertainment equipment, casual and upscale dining out, entertainment, recreation, domestic and international travel, designer and non-designer apparel, collectibles, fine jewelry, and political and charitable contributions.

Of the 17 future spending indexes, only four are at positive levels. Of the 13 categories with negative indexes, 11 declined from their Spring 2005 level. The Future Spending Index average (91.8) is at its lowest level since tracking began in Fall 2003.

Approximately two-thirds of the respondents expect to spend the same amount for holiday gifts this year as last year. The number who expect to spend “less” (21%) this year is about double the number who expect to spend “more” (11%).

This information is based on a national survey of 448 men and women in the wealthiest 10% of American households. The survey participants have an average income of $308,000 and an average net worth of $2.7 million. The survey has a 5% margin of error at the 95% confidence level.Highlights of the survey can be found at the AARC website www.affluenceresearch.org

Make Clothes Dryer More Efficient by Recycling the Heat

August 17th, 2008

As the cost of electricity continues to skyrocket consumers are looking for new ideas to help get the most value out of their appliances. This includes the electric clothes dryer.

Although consumption cannot be lowered there is a device to take advantage of the heat it produces. It is called a dryer heat recycler. It has proven to be a winner in the fight to be more energy efficient.

A heat recycler does just what its name indicates. It allows the warm air from the household electric clothes dryer to be redirected back into the laundry room. This is an added bonus if the laundry room is in a cold basement. Plus the heat is free.

The theory behind the recycler is simple. It uses the hot air from the electric dryer to heat the laundry room. In this way the room vent can be closed down. Hence lowering your heating costs.

The element in an electric dryer is approximately 5000 watts. This is equivalent to a couple of baseboard heaters. The temperature of the air leaving an electric dryer is about 130 degrees Fahrenheit. So why waste it - instead, put it to work for you.

For an investment of about $15 the hot air your dryer normally dumps outside can be directed back into the house. We have been successfully suggesting these to clients for years.

There is a plastic handle on the side to direct the air either inside or outside. In the winter months the handle is adjusted to direct the hot air into the house. In the summer the air is directed back outside.

The heat recycler is easy to install. It is usually mounted (screws are provided) to a wall or beam behind, and slightly above, the dryer console area. Once mounted the dryer venting can be cut and reattached to the device. Follow the instructions to maintain proper airflow direction. The recycler does have an “in” and an “out”. Always mount the recycler for easy access by all family members. If mounted in an awkward place no one will clean the filter.

Before purchase make sure the model you buy comes complete with two venting clamps. Some less expensive ones don’t include the clamps. Clamps are vital for a proper installation. Do not be tempted to attach the venting sections to the recycler with duct tape. It will dry out and cause the venting to fall off. If required invest in two good quality metal vent clamps. A couple of four-inch clamps will cost about three dollars.

The recycler has a built-in filter screen that needs to be cleaned just like the one inside the dryer. We prefer the type that has a mesh screen filter as opposed to the one with a sock-like filter. It is a couple of dollars more but the metal filter is more durable and a lot easier to clean than the cotton type.

So once the recycler is mounted and secured give it a test run. Set the temperature selector to hot and start dryer. Allow dryer to run a few minutes. Test that the air comes inside when the handle is in the winter position. Next, move handle to summer position. Air should then be seen to go outdoors. Go outside and confirm air freely escapes outdoors. If not the screen in the outdoor vent cap may be blocked with lint. Or the vent cap flapper valve may be sticking. Go back indoors and test all joints for air leakage. If leaking air, tape joints with duct tape.

From then on all that is required is to clean the heat recycler filter every few laundry loads. Plus, twice a year turn the handle to redirect the airflow. Not much work to get all that nice free hot air for your home.

Note that throughout this article I have been using the term electrical clothes dryer. The heat recycler cannot be used with a gas clothes dryer. The venting pipe of a gas dryer must not be opened or redirected. Small amounts of gas vapour and carbon monoxide may be present in the outlet air of a gas clothes dryer. Therefore, for safety reasons, the heat recycler cannot be used with a gas dryer.

TECHNICIANS HINT: Experience has taught us not to mount the recycler directly above the start switch of the dryer. This avoids the recycler giving you a blast of hot air in the face every time the dryer is started.
