The Power of Networking

June 28th, 2008

“If you don’t network, you don’t get work.” - Unknown

How powerful is your network? What would happen if you got fired today? What would happen if you had to fold your business and declare bankruptcy? What would happen if a loved one needed emergency medical surgery not covered by insurance and it was a matter of life and death? How many people in your network would be able to really help you out when the going gets tough? Would you be able to pick up the phone, call up one of your contacts, and get a decent job referral or have them lend you some money to tie you over?

This might sound like too serious and morbid a topic to even think about during the holiday season, but let’s face it - many employers wait until after the holidays to break the bad news, and many businesses fold after a bad holiday shopping season. So if you haven’t asked yourself this question, now is a good time to ask and honestly answer the question.

Do you think that someone you haven’t called in months, maybe years, is going to open up their wallet or rolodex and help you out of the kindness of their heart. Maybe. And that’s a BIG maybe. But in all likelihood, I think not. In fact, it would be insulting to the person and demeaning to you, that you never bothered to stay in touch, and are only calling to hit them up for some money. In some cases, people do have the financial and/or human resources to help out but it’s more likely they will help out someone they know and trust over a stranger.

Networking is not about handing out and collecting business cards. It’s about developing relationships. It’s about picking up the phone and calling people and staying in touch with them. Do something nice for someone in your network. Refer them a lead for their business. Offer to help them out on a project or to lend a helping hand if they’re moving. They’ll remember you for it.

Stay in touch! And for heaven’s sake, if someone gives YOU a lead, follow up right away!! Life is too short and fragile. I remember getting a good lead from someone in regards to contacting the legendary Canadian author, Pierre Berton, who wrote 50 books in 50 years, and won three Governor-General’s Awards and 14 honorary degrees. I kept putting it off, and putting it off, thinking I had all the time in the world, and eventually the lead got filed away somewhere and I forgot about it. Mr. Berton died recently at the age of 84 at Sunnybrook hospital in Toronto of complications from diabetes and heart disease. Canada is at a loss. I most certainly am at a loss

Home Schooling or Not?

June 28th, 2008

Much of what I thought about home schooling was wrong. The conventional wisdom about this rapidly growing dimension of American education is too simple, too stereotyped and too stale.

For instance, the Home School Legal Defense Association, despite its energetic lawyers and many admirers, is not the leader of home schooling in this country. There is no leader, and no reigning ideology. There are instead at least a million American children - the real figure is probably twice that number - whose families want them to learn at home for many reasons, often having little to do with religion or politics.

The common image of home-schoolers as lockstep religious conservatives falls apart when you discover that some of these parents have been shunned by their fundamentalist churches for teaching their kids at home rather than sending them to the church’s school. Some home-schoolers love the new for-profit online teaching programs like K12. Some think they are a corporate plot. Some parents are home-schooling because their kids were learning more quickly than their teachers could keep up with. Some are home-schooling because their kids were learning more slowly than their public school teachers had patience for. Some home-school because their children were unhappy at school. Some home-school because they could not meet their needs any other way.

Public school educators often worry that the children of such people will not learn necessary social skills. But home-schooling parents said their children learned how to deal with other people just fine, particularly with the many adults they encountered when they visited the library or went to church or did chores around the neighborhood. With their parents so often at their side, they were able to see what good manners and self-confidence looked like, rather than be forced to adopt the jungle code of the average high school corridor. In many families one parent stays at home to supervise the home schooling, although they often do some work there to pay the bills, or trade off with other home-schooling parents when they have to be away.

Home schooling involves a tremendous commitment from the parents. At least one parent must be willing to work closely with the child, plan lessons, keep abreast of requirements, and perhaps negotiate issues with the school district. The most common home school arrangement is for the mother to teach while the father works out of the home. There are a variety of educational materials geared for the home school, published by dozens of suppliers. Some are correspondence courses, which grade students’ work, some are full curricula, and some are single topic workbooks or drill materials in areas such as math or phonics.

Many of the curriculum providers are indentifiably Christian, including several major home school publishers such as Bob Jones University Press, Alpha Omega Publications, and Home Study International. A major non-religious provider of home school materials is the Calvert School in Baltimore. Figures vary as to how many home schools use published curricula or correspondence courses, but the Department of Education estimates that it is from 25 to 50%; the rest use a curriculum the parents and/or child have devised. Education writer John Holt, a champion of home schooling, suggested that no particular area of study was essential. He advised parents to use real life activities such as work in a family business, writing letters, bookkeeping, observing nature, and talking with old people as meaningful academic lessons. Home schools might fall anywhere on this spectrum, between the tightly planned study of a formal curriculum to Holt’s free-form, experiential learning.

But first, all the parents interested in teaching their children at home need to find out what laws apply to their state and school district.

Spend More of Your Time Selling

June 27th, 2008

The majority of people in the sales force spend an average of no more than two hours out of their day actually selling.

This fact is astonishing for two reasons. One, how do we as sales people manage to meet our goals. And two, why on earth are we in sales to begin with?

The lack of hours spent selling in our work week is understandable. Lets face it. The paperwork alone can take up half of your day. Not to mention the phone calls, the problem solving, putting out fires, etc.

There are many challenges to be faced throughout the day.

Why is this? Why does this happen?

It is all believed to be a mind set, and a very dangerous one at that if you plan to survive in the world of retail.

Because problem solving and handling customer complaints is a difficult challenge we must face on a daily basis, we automatically believe that this should take priority over our selling, because we see the selling as fun and rewarding.

All the other issues can be stressful, so we tend to want them out of the way so we don’t have to worry about them.

Yes, dealing with current customers and building the relationship is very important, but your goals don’t go away. So we must obtain new customers through new sales.

Probably the key ingredient to spend more of your time selling is time management.

Put together an action plan for each day of the week where you allow at least four hours of your day to be spent selling.

It is very easy to put an action plan together, but it is extremely critical that you stick to it in order to succeed.

Another key ingredient to spending more time selling is delegation. If you have the luxury of a staff, why not delegate some of the operational issues to other people.

Plus, you know the rush you get from a sale, the thrill of closing the deal. This can have a psychological effect on your work day. Making a sale is a great feeling and certainly out weighs the depressed feeling that comes with dealing with operational issues all day.

Remember, you are a sales person, and it is very important to spend the majority of your time selling.

There is not a problem that your current customer is having that cannot be fixed by either you or the person you delegate it to. So concentrate on sales.

The right word for hair loss is alopecia. The very most typical type of hair loss is male pattern baldness and affects roughly a third of men and ladies. This sort of hair loss is typically permanent.

Permanent hair loss comes in three forms. Male pattern baldness might often start in the remarkably early part of a man?s life, with hair loss starting as early as 20 years old. The typical first signs will probably include loss and baldness of hair around the top part of the scalp and don’t forget at the hairline above the forehead. The Benefits of Consolidating Your Debts With A Second Mortgage

June 20th, 2008

Debt runs very high in our country today - and many Americans are feeling the pinch. The good news is, though, that it is a problem that has a few possible solutions. As with any problem, the main thing is how to solve it. One quick solution may be to consolidate your debts with a home equity loan, or, by getting a 2nd mortgage on your home. This could be just the way you need to go. While this could be the solution you need, there are some things you need to watch out for - as well as some concerns about going this route, and this article will cover some of them for you.

Watch Out For Increased Interest Rates

Before ever thinking about a second mortgage, you may want to see if you can simply refinance your existing mortgage - at a lower rate of interest. If mortgage refinancing is not available to you, then getting a second mortgage could be a great thing - if the new interest rate is lower than the rate on the existing debt - possibly on your credit cards. If your credit card rate is around 10 or 11%, then this is probably already lower than the rate you will get for the new loan. Of course, credit card rates differ, so it may pay for you to put only the higher rated cards onto the new loan.

Carefully Calculate The Loan Features

Some of the numbers that you may be presented with might look good on paper, but be sure to ask those pertinent questions. In other words, just because your monthly payment may be lower, this does not at all mean that a particular home equity loan is what you want. A lower payment could also mean stretching out your payments for a much longer period, which will increase the amount of money that you actually owe. Mortgage-expo.com, an online company, says that there are other things to consider, too:

“2nd mortgage rates will vary based on your individual situation and credit status therefore take care to retain a good credit score. Apart from checking out rates you should also enquire about closing costs, mortgage points and all other pertaining facts.”1

Be sure to look into the features of the mortgage, and don’t jump to placing your signature on the dotted line just because it sounds good. Remember that loan originator companies are also salesmen, and while they must be entitled to make a living, they don’t necessarily have to get rich off of your haste.

Consider The Types of Mortgages Available

There are basically just two types of mortgages:

The Fixed Mortgage Rate

The fixed rate mortgage gives you a greater stability, simply because it offers you a fixed payment. In other words, you always know exactly what your payment will be - for the life of the loan. Any changes in the economy will not affect it. One word of caution, though, it may not be assumable.

The Adjustable Rate Mortgages (ARM)

On the other hand, the adjustable rate mortgage, while it will give you a steady rate during the initial fixed rate portion of the loan (usually in 1, 3, 5, and 7 year periods), it may or may not become lower after that. It depends entirely on the economy. This type of loan could work to your benefit if you are intending to pay it off in the fixed rate time period of the loan. However, You will want to make sure that you can pay it off early - without any penalty. Also, some may not be convertible to a fixed-rate mortgage.

Look For Ways To Reinvest Any Savings

In order for this method of debt consolidation to really be beneficial to you, you need to try and put as much as possible each month toward the payment of the debt. Lower mortgage rates do mean a smaller payment, and more money in your pocket. Instead of taking the extra money and putting it toward new purchases, you must take a good-sized piece of it and apply it toward paying off the mortgage - on a monthly basis.

The best way to really enjoy financial freedom involves both the liberty to have all debts paid (or, at least comfortably sustainable), and knowing how to say “No” to new purchases bought on mere impulse. That includes, of course, the newest and the latest - of anything! Remember, too, that anything bought on credit means that you are paying more (sometimes much more) than you would if you paid cash for the same thing. Remember this when you buy things on “Sale” with a credit card! Unless you can pay it off when your next bill comes due, you probably are not getting any real savings!

Tips On Getting The Best Deals On A Home Equity Loan

Here are a couple of ways to get the best arrangement for a home equity loan:

Learn All You Can About Your Options - Do Your Homework

One possible option may be to simply get a second job - for a short term. Another may be to get a better paying job. Being able to pay off those debts quickly, instead of with a lot of unnecessary interest is always the better way to go.

Seek The Lowest Interest Rate Possible

With the mortgage calculators that are available online, you can really do some educated shopping around for the best price. A single percent in interest could mean much money saved when spread over a span of several years.

Keep The Loan Time Limit To The Least Possible

Remember that the goal here is to pay off the debt - not to find new ways to get deeper in debt. While obtaining your 2nd mortgage, don’t be tempted to stretch it out as long as possible, but keep it reasonably short.

Getting a home equity loan could be just the thing that you need to bring some relief to a difficult financial situation when you need to get debt consolidation. Remember, though, to take some wise steps to prevent that need from happening again - seek for the long-lasting debt relief.

Dallas (DVD) Review

June 19th, 2008

Nominated for 18 Emmys and 15 Golden Globes in its thirteen season run, Dallas is the epitome of the prime-time drama/soap opera genre. Premiering in 1978 as a five part mini-series, the show combines the usual sex and innuendo of classic afternoon soap operas with the freewheeling adventure of Texas wildcats and filthy rich capitalist oil barons. The combination of business dealings and rampant affairs tested well with both the male and female demographic, prompting CBS to make Dallas a regular part of its prime-time lineup. The result was one of the most successful television shows in history. In fact, the so-called ‘Who shot J.R.?” episode (”A House Divided” Air Date: 3-21-1980) still reigns as the second most watched TV show in history (the season finale of MASH is #1). With one of most memorable characters ever created (the man everyone loves to hate), it’s no surprise that Dallas held the #1 or #2 spot in the Nielsen ratings for most of the 1980s…

Dallas spent most of its television life in the Friday night time slot following the successful CBS series, The Dukes Of Hazzard. Creator David Jacobs originally intended to create a series around a poor Texas girl, Pam Barnes (Victoria Principal), who marries into a wealthy family (The Ewings) with whom her family has been feuding for decades. The first five episodes mostly center around the family discord faced by Pam and her husband Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) as they attempt to bring their families to a truce. But it soon became apparent to producers of the show that Bobby’s scoundrel of a brother, Ewing Oil President J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman), would be the true star of the show. Son of Ewing Oil founder Jock Ewing (Jim Davis) and his wife Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes), J.R. sought to make Ewing Oil the largest independent oil company in the world, and he intended to go to any lengths necessary to get what he wanted.

And as you’ll see, sooner or later, J.R. always gets what he wants… Along the way, he butts heads with life-long rival Cliff Barnes (Ken Kercheval), drives his own wife Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) to alcoholism, and even mortgages the beloved Southfork Ranch (Miss Ellie’s childhood home and current residence for the majority of the Ewing clan). Southfork foreman Ray Krebs (Steve Kanaly) and Ewing grandchild Lucy (Charlene Tilton) add flavorful subplots to a series often dominated by J.R.’s nefarious schemes. In short, Dallas offers its viewers everything - money, sex, violence, conspiracy, intricate business dealings, etc. If you haven’t seen it, then immediately start watching from the beginning episodes of the first season. You won’t be disappointed…!

The Dallas DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the series premiere “Digger’s Daughter” in which the youngest of the Ewing sons, Bobby, introduces his wealthy family to his new bride, Pamela Barnes. But given the long-standing feud between their two families, not everyone is pleased. In fact, older brother J.R. immediately begins plotting to break up the marriage… Other notable episodes include “Election” in which J.R.’s nemesis Cliff Barnes sees his congressional hopes undercut by a Ewing-financed opposition campaign, and the season finale “John Ewing III” in which Sue Ellen’s alcoholism threatens the life of her unborn baby…
