Lobster Bisque Soup Recipe

May 16th, 2008

The lobster bisque is very rich, so a small serving (about two-thirds cup per person) is plenty. At the restaurant, this is baked in individual crocks, with puff pastry on top.

2 lb boiled lobsters, medium sized
2 1/2 c fish or chicken stock
1 onion, sliced
4 celery stalks, with leaves
2 cloves, whole
1 bay leaf
1/4 c soft butter
1/4 c flour
3 c milk; heated
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 c cream; hot but not boiling
2 tablespoons sherry
1/8 teaspoon parsley; minced
1/8 teaspoon paprika

Remove the meat from boiled lobsters. Dice and reserve the body meat and mince the tail and claw meat. Crush the shells and add them to the stock along with the onion, celery, cloves and bay leaf. Simmer these ingredients for about 30 minutes and strain the stock.

Combine the flour and soft butter in a small saucepan and cook for about 5 minutes, but do not let flour begin to color. Gradually pour the heated milk into this mixture. Whisk to combine thoroughly then add nutmeg. If there is coral roe, force it through a fine sieve into the mixture. Stir in the strained stock.

When the soup is smooth and boiling, add the lobster and simmer the bisque, adding the sherry and cover for 5 min. turning off the heat after that. Stir in the cream and season to taste. Serve at once with minced parsley and paprika, if desired.

Vitamin C and the Importance in Health and Disease

May 16th, 2008

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is essential for normal growth and the maintenance of practically all the body tissues, especially those of the joints, bones, teeth, and gums. It protects one against infections and acts as a harmless antibiotic. It promotes healing and serves as protection against all forms of stress and harmful effects of toxic chemicals. It helps prevent and cure the common cold. It also helps in decreasing blood cholesterol.

This vitamin is found in citrus fruits, berries, green and leafy vegetables, tomatoes, potatoes, sprouted bengal, and green grams. A deficiency can cause scurvy marked by weakness, anaemia, bleeding gums and painful and swollen parts, slow healing of sores and wounds, premature aging and lowered resistance to all infections.

The recommended daily allowance is 50 to 75 mg. for adults and 30 to 50 mg. for children.
Smokers and older persons have greater need for vitamin C. It is used therapeutically in huge
doses from 100 to 10,000mg. a day. It prevents and cures colds and infections effectively,
neutralises various toxins in the system, speeds healing processes in virtually all cases of ill
health, increases sexual vitality and prevents premature aging.

According to Dr. Linus Pauling,
a world famous chemist and nutrition expert, “Because vitamin C is one of the least toxic
vitamins, it is very safe to use in high doses. Your body will take exactly what it needs and
excrete any excess naturally.”

Private Practice Building - Freedom

May 16th, 2008

Tonight when we were in the driveway shooting off fireworks with our sons, I was reminded of an Independence Day a few years back. An elderly couple from England had just moved in across the street. As we were piling in the
car that July 4th, my wife asked the English couple if they would like to come with us to watch the fireworks at the lake. They agreed, and then cracked me up as they got in van and said, in typical British style, ‘We will be glad to come and watch with you, but we won’t be celebrating…’

Whether you are in the states and celebrating, or living in
another part of the world, we can all celebrate our freedoms. At this time each year, I write an article on ‘Freedom from
and Freedom to……’ It occured to me tonight that it might be
a nice idea to write one about our many freedoms we have in the
practices we enjoy. So here is my Independence Day gift to you,
wherever you live.

Freedom from

Freedom from boredom in our work - Each Monday morning as I drive to the office here in Tallahassee, Florida, I glance at the drivers next to me and try to pick out the ones that look as if they are about to begin ‘a five day sentence’ doing something they hate to do. And I once again thank God that I get to do something I love every day.

Freedom from managed care and the insurance world - I have not touched managed care or insurance since May 1, 1996. More than nine years later, I am still excited that I do not have to fool with thatcrazy drudgery any more!

Freedom from having a job - ‘The more you want to do something the less it seems like work’ is a quote I get to live out every day. I have my dream job, and cannot imagine doing anything else. One of my passions is a desire for others in the helping professions to feel the same joy and excitement I do each day. An important fact to remember here is that boss spelled backwards is ‘double s ob.’

Freedom to

Freedom to live out our calling - I believe each one of us has shown up on the planet with a purpose. That purpose is to deliver to the world something that NO ONE ELSE could ever deliver. Instead of wondering where in the world you are going to find clients, change your thinking to the FACT that there are so many people out there that need what you have you could never get to them all.

Freedom to be creative with what is inside you - So many people tell me that they could never do anything other than meet with clients and could not imagine having any products to offer others. You may have heard me say this before - ‘If you can write a 7item grocery list, you can write an article.’ And then an article can become a free report, an e-course, an e-book, a presentation, a CD and/or DVD series, etc. We have opportunity to work once and get paid, get paid, get paid, get paid……………… And if that is not something worth celebrating, I don’t know what is!

Freedom to design your own life - Being able to work for yourself, to work with who you want to work with, doing the work you want to do, when you want to do it, is the best way I know of to be in a position to design the life you would like to live.

My challenge to you, and to me, on this Independence Day is
to take these rare freedoms, and make the very very most out of them that you can in the next year. Then we will meet back here this time next year to CELEBRATE!

Tips for planning a retirement party

May 16th, 2008

Inviting mystery guests is a good idea as long as they are job related. For instance, former coworkers or a former boss would be a suitable mystery guest. Having a guestbook is a good idea. This will allow the honoree to remember all of the guest that helped plan and celebrated their retirement party with them. The group that panned the retirement party should determine whether or not to give gifts to the honoree. It is a good idea to always include receipts with the gifts just incase the honoree doesn’t like the gift. Gifts aren’t necessary but should be considered for all parties.

Retirement isn’t always a good thing. At first it might seem like it is but after awhile rough times usually follow. It is a good idea to be able to identify the positive and negative aspect of retirement when planning a retirement party. It is a good idea to find out what the other employees think of the retiree before planning the party. The employer’s aspect is usually just as important if not more important than the opinion of the other employees. If you want to plan a small party simply have each employee bring a gift and some type of refreshment. Be sure to invite the retiree’s family and friends outside of the work area.

College Books - Tips and Tricks for Saving Money

May 16th, 2008

College books are getting more and more expensive every year. University course textbooks are one of the biggest expenses of attending college and the average amount of money needed for college books is $800 per year. The cost of college textbooks is also constantly increasing by around 6% per year. Textbooks are essential for most college courses and can often seem impossible to afford however, it is possible for college students to save quite a bit of money on their books by shopping smart.

One of the best ways to save on spending a lot of money on college books is to borrow them instead of purchasing them. University libraries have a good stock of required reading books that students can use on the premises throughout their course and help lessen the impact of not having enough money for actually purchasing college books. Naturally the majority of savvy students have cottoned on to the fact that they too can save money on college books by using the ones stocked by the library so it may be difficult to be able to find the book not in use on a regular basis. If you plan ahead and set aside a few different times of the day and week to visit the library you may find the best options for you to be able to use the college books that you want. Not everyone wants to study late in the evenings, especially at weekends, but if your library is open and you are intent on finding ways to save on spending money for college books then this could be the perfect time.

Another avenue that may work to save spending a lot of money on college books is to approach your course professor. They will often have a huge stock of college books that they have acquired through various means over the years and it is a good idea to see if you can borrow a particular book that they may have. Not only may this help but you be able to find out if certain college books are really required for the course or if you are only going to need a chapter or two from them. With this advance knowledge you can obtain a copy of the book for a short period of time from the library or another student who has bought the book and read the relevant chapters without having to fork out the money for college books that you won’t necessarily need.

Understanding Data Transfer

May 16th, 2008

Website owners may benefit from a basic understanding of what hosting companies refer to as “data transfer”. It is a cost component of nearly of all web hosting packages, and understanding it may help website owners make better cost decisions before choosing a web host.

Data Transfer Overview

Transfer i.e. .”Bandwidth” or “traffic” is the amount of information (in bytes) transferred back and forth from visitor’s computer to the server your domain is hosted on. Examples of data transfer can be… someone filling out a form and submitting it back to your web site; a visitor downloading images, audio or video, or just surfing your website. Every time a web surfer visits your web pages, data is transferred from the server your website is hosted on, to their computer. As you want a lot of people to “hit” your site, you want a plenty of data to be transferred!

Your host may or may not include FTP as data transfer. If it does, this may be critical to your data transfer quota if for example, you make regular database changes that require downloading, making changes, and then uploading an entire database back to the server. This is just an example as many web sites implement CMS (Content Management Systems) that allow database editing through administration control panels, thus minimizing the quantity of data transfer.

You’ll see that it is very common now days to get sufficient amounts of data transfer with most good online hosts. What that means, is that most small ecommerce storefronts should be able to get plenty of traffic, keep hosting costs down and not worry about running out of their monthly bandwidth quota.

Data Transfer Calculations

Here is an example of calculating data transfer for a hypothetical web account.

Say you have an account that allows 7GB of data transfer per month and your average file size transferred is 100KB (the size of 6-7 page views). This being the case you can move 73,400 files per month , or 2446 daily, over 30 days.

Here’s how we get that number :

1.) Convert the avg file size fro KB to Bytes: 100 X 1024=102,400

2.) Determine the number of bytes in 7GB by the number of bytes in 1 GB - 7 x 1073,741,824 =7,516,192,768

3.) Lastly, divide the number of bytes in 7GB by the number of bytes in your avg file size: 7,516,192,768 /102,400=73,400

What this means is that visitors would have to hit your site and transfer roughly 100 - 100KB files every hour 24/7 for a month before you would use up all your bandwidth. This is probably extreme unless you’re really big, like Amazon. Meanwhile, rest assured, there are plenty of good quality hosts that include lots of bandwidth (50 GB) monthly for between $5-10 USD. This is typically enough for most small ecommerce sites to run smoothly. By the way, if your getting traffic like that then you probably don’t need this article anyway because you can probably afford your own web hosting company!
